Application

To apply, you may complete an online form. 

A $60.00(US) application fee is required prior to completion of the application process. The non-refundable application fee should be paid online by credit card or in the form of a certified check or money order made payable to Pittsburg State University. There is an additional Express Mail fee for the mailing of the admission packet and immigration documents. 

Graduate Programs available to International Students and their Requirements

Submit the following: 

 The transcript should clearly indicate:

  1. all coursework and grades (or marks)
  2. the degree awarded
  3. the date the degree was awarded
  4. the name of the institution where degree was earned
  
Please note that a 2.7/4.0 converted grade point average is required for admission to any of our graduate programs.

Deadlines

The following are required prior to completion of the application process:

STEP 1

Submit application for admission.

STEP 2

  • Pay the $60.00 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee
  • For an additional cost, we will Express Mail your I-20 should you be accepted

STEP 3

Submit the following documents:

  • Complete official transcripts or academic records in native language and official English translation including grades earned in each subject.
  • Copy of the secondary school or high school certificate of completion or diploma, if applicable
  • Official TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo score results (not required for conditional admission)
  • Current certified bank statement or financial guarantee (within 6 months)
  • Financial Statement of Support form
  • Delivery Method form
  • Copy of passport (if available)

All official documents (original or certified copies) must be mailed directly to Pittsburg State University. Official transcripts must be received direct from the issuing school in a sealed envelop.

STEP 4

  • If you are currently studying in the U.S., you will need to complete the SEVIS Transfer Form
  • Transfer Students: Please send official transcripts to the Registrar's Office for a transfer credit evaluation.
  • If your spouse and/or dependent children will be joining you in the U.S., you will need to complete the Dependent Form
  • Applicants from the European Union (EU), you must submit this completed GDPR Consent Form before your application can be processed.

Academic Requirements

  • High School Academic Records: A minimum GPA (grade point average) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) in high school and have earned a high school diploma
  • International College/University Academic Records: A minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) in an accredited international post secondary institution (college/university)
  • U.S. College/University Academic Records: A minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) if transferring from an accredited U.S. college with at least 24 credit hours (approximately one year of college work)

International students are exempt from the ACT or SAT requirement for admission. The ACT/SAT is not required for international admission.

English Language Requirement

In order to begin academic programs at Pittsburg State University, all International students must submit an official, passing TOEFL, IELTS or PTE score to the Office of International Programs and Services. These are the requirements for most undergraduate programs.

TOEFL
TOEFL score of at least 68 (iBT) is required. In addition, a minimum score of 15 is required in each section (internet). Some academic programs (majors) may require a higher TOEFL score.* Institutional TOEFL and ITP TOEFL scores are not accepted.

How to submit your test score
Contact ETS and request that your score be sent to PSU electronically. Our university code is 6336. You do not need to enter a departmental code.

IELTS
Overall score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.0. in each band of the IELTS is required. If a lower score is earned in any of the five band scores, the overall score cannot be accepted. Some academic programs (majors) may require a higher IELTS score.*

Contact IELTS and request that an official score sheet be sent to PSU.

PTE
Overall score of 47. Some academic programs (majors) may require a higher PTE score.* 

How to submit your test score
Visit www.pearsonvue.com/pte and log in to send the PTE score to PSU electronically. You do not need a code. Click ‘Current Activity’ on the left of the screen followed by ‘Send Scores’ next to the test for which you want to send scores. You will then be able to search the database of institutions and select Pittsburg State University.  Click on ‘Next’.

Duolingo English Test
Overall score of 100 with a miniumum score of 100 in each section is required. Some academic programs (majors) may require a higher Duolingo score.*

How to submit your test score
Visit https://englishtest.duolingo.com/applicants and log into send the Duolingo score to PSU directly. You do not need a school code. You will then be able to search the database of institutions and select Pittsburg State University.

Majors that require higher scores

Communication: Requires a 79 (with 15 in each section) on the TOEFL or a 6.5 (with 5.5 in each section) on the IELTS or a 53 on the PTE or a 110 on the Duolingo English Test. 

Psychology: Requires a 79 (with 15 in each section) on the TOEFL or a 6.5 (with 5.5 in each section) on the IELTS  or a 53 on the PTE or a 110 on the Duolingo English Test. 

ESOL: Requires a 79 (with 15 in each section) on the TOEFL or a 6.5 (with 5.5 in each section) on the IELTS or a 53 on the PTE or a 110 on the Duolingo English Test. 

Nursing: A student who is born outside of the United States is required to submit proof that he or she has taken and passed the TOEFL iBT.  Minimum scores for the TOEFL iBT are as follows:  Writing-20; Speaking-20; Reading-19; Listening-20, for a total of 79.  Each area must meet the minimum requirement.  A personal interview may be required. Nursing majors must submit a TOEFL - this cannot be waived or substituted.

Conditional Admission - Intensive English Program

Students who do not submit a passing TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo score can be offered conditional admission for most academic programs. Students will be required to enroll in and successfully complete the highest level of PSU's Intensive English Program (IEP), prior to beginning any academic coursework. The successful completion of the Academic Preparation Course is equivalent of a 79 TOEFL and can be substituted for the TOEFL requirement for more programs. Exemptions

Applicants who can verify one of the following prior to enrollment are exempt from the TOEFL and IELTS requirements:

  • Graduated from an accredited high school in United States.
  • Completed 24 transfer hours from an accredited post secondary institution in the United States that includes 3 credit hours of English Composition equivalent to PSU English Composition 101 with a grade of C or better.
  • German students who have passed the DAAD language test through the German Academic Exchange Service with a score of B2, C1 or C2.
  • Japanese students who have a minimum score of 1125 on the GTEC exam (equivalent to a 68 TOEFL).

Exchange students

Undergraduate Exchange Student Admission

Applications for admission are accepted for Fall Semester (August) and Spring Semester (January). Summer session is not included in the exchange program.

The following are required prior to completion of the application process:

Intensive English Program (IEP)

Intensive English Program (IEP) Admission

Intakes 
  • Fall Semester (August-December)
  • Spring Semester (January-May)
  • Summer Session (June-July)

For those students wanting to attend IEP for 8-weeks only, you may join in January, March, June, August or October with special permission. This is for the Intermediate Level only. Students will be responsible for all prior course content.

Submit application for admission and pay application fee.

For conditional admission into an academic program, you will also need to submit school transcripts/academic records (and English translations).

STEP 3

Take the online Duolingo English Test for pre-assessment purposes. 

Please take this online test from any computer with Internet access, webcam, and microphone/speakers. The test can be taken anytime at your convenience and will take about 45 minutes to complete. The test scores will be sent to PSU in 48 hours. Select Pittsburg State University when registering for the test. The cost is $49. Once you arrive to PSU and enroll in IEP, the $49 test fee will be refunded to you in the form of a tuition waiver with proof of receipt. 

You may also submit a TOEFL, IELTS or PTE score for pre-assessment purposes only. 

 

IEP Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must have completed high school to be admitted into IEP.
  • For conditional admission, applicants must meet the admission requirements for the academic program. Only one application is needed. Please complete the undergraduate or graduate application process for conditional admission.

Students will take an IEP placement test during Orientation upon arriving to PSU to determine starting level.
