April 2019 Newsletter

Gorilla Nation Heroes

Spring is a time for change and new beginnings, so let's start with the Registrar's Office.  Michelle has moved on to bigger and better things within our office and I have stepped in as your new School Certifying Official.  Several of you have already stopped by to meet me and certify your enrollment for the Summer and Fall semesters, but I would like to take this opportunity to remind the rest of you to try to get that done before Finals so I can take care of things on my end.  We don't want an interruption in your benefits.

I would also like to invite you to attend our Cord Ceremony scheduled for May 1 from 6-7:00pm in the Heritage Room of the Overman Student Center.  This is open to friends and family, so don't forget to ask them to be a part of the evening as they see us honor you with the presentation of special red/white/blue cords for you to add to your commencement regalia.  Please let me know if you plan to attend so that I can plan the refreshments accordingly.  You can reach me at rstricklin@pittstate.edu or 620-235-4202.

Student Veteran Organization News

I hope everyone had a good semester and for those of you graduating, "Congratulations! Job well done!"  I think I can speak for the rest of your felllow veterans in wishing you the best of luck with your future.  For those returning this summer and next year, I look forward to seeing you on campus and if there is anything I can do to help, pleae don't hesitate to ask!!

I'll also put a quick plug in here for the Student Veteran's Organization--they do have some volunteer opportunities coming up with you're more than welcome to attend; we'd love to see you there.  The SVO will "Wash Away Winter" at our Veteran's Memorial the Saturday before Memorial Day.  This is in partnership with the Physical Plant Grounds Maintenance team; they'll provide the tools and material, and the SVO members will provide the manpower.  As you know, the Pitt State Veteran's Memorial is a very unique and special place on our campus that gets thousands of visitors a year and also hosts numerous ceremonies such as Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, and ROTC Commissioning so we want it to look as good as possible, which is why the SVO adopts this project each year.  I'll be there and look forward to seeing you.  Other volunteering opportunities will be Move-In Day in August and assisting with Toys For Tots in December.

Have a wonderful summer.  Be safe and have fun!!

Federal and State Tuition Assistance options are available to qualified active duty members of the armed forces. TA is separate from FAFSA, but can be used in conjunction with this and other financial aid resources. However, TA is identified as the First Payer.

Request for Military Tuition Assistance may be initiated by the service member in their branch portal and approved by the ESO up to 90 days prior to the start of the semester, but no later than 2 weeks prior to the semester start date. Click on the appropriate branch above for application procedures.

Service members MUST receive approval from an Educational Services Officer or Military Service counselor PRIOR to enrolling in classes.

When receiving TA, you must fill out an Information Release For Students with Third Party Sponsorships form each semester and submit it to Lyndy Little in the Cashier's Office, or by email at llittle@pittstate.edu. This form allows her to submit an invoice on your behalf. This money is paid directly to the institution by the individual services.
