Who We Serve

Advancing Materials Science with Students, Educators, Communities, Industry, and Strategic Partners

For Forward Thinkers & Forward Doers

Materials science holds limitless potential — from foundational education to transformative technologies that drive economic growth and environmental responsibility. At Research & Innovation, we partner with students, researchers, companies, and organizations to solve today’s toughest materials challenges and pioneer solutions for those yet to be defined. Whether addressing known industry needs or exploring uncharted frontiers, we empower our partners to innovate with purpose.

Students of Research & Innovation

At Pittsburg State University, learning goes beyond the classroom. Through the Research and Innovation division, students in materials science, plastics engineering technology, polymer chemistry, and more gain hands-on experience in labs, industry projects, and faculty-led research.

From developing sustainable materials to exploring new manufacturing techniques, you’ll build real-world skills, make connections, and prepare for your future. This is where what you learn turns into what you can do.

Student Program

Academic Institutions

We support materials science learning across K–12 schools and higher education through hands-on programs, curriculum guidance, and real support for educators.

Students and teachers in STEM can also take part in internships, working alongside researchers on real-world projects. It’s a chance to build experience, explore career paths, and see what’s possible in materials science.

Communities

We believe in thinking globally and making a difference close to home. Research & Innovation works with communities across Southeast Kansas and the surrounding region to create opportunities for growth and long-term success.

From expanding the use of renewable materials to supporting local industries, our work is rooted in real partnerships. Through initiatives that bring jobs to the region and workshops that connect scientists, farmers, and community leaders, we’re helping build a strong, high-tech workforce for the future.

Industry & Business

Our research and technology support efforts in virtually every industry from aerospace to home furnishings, helping partners turn ideas into real solutions.

Through our partnership with Cargill, BiOH® polyols are now used in products across automotive, construction, agriculture, and more. Alongside Cargill, we’ve worked with organizations like Boeing, Cessna, Raytheon, the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Agriculture, United Soybean Board, Kansas Soybean Board, and the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council to advance innovation and bring new opportunities to market.

Industries we serve: Automotive, Aerospace, Agriculture, Home Furnishings, Construction, and Recreation.
