Health, Human Performance, and Recreation

The Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation (HHPR) is located in the new Student Recreation Center. The HHPR faculty possess a wide array of specializations. The department offers undergraduate degree programs in Exercise Science, Recreation, and Physical Education, a minor and certificate in Dance, as well as a graduate program in HHPR. Within each of the degree programs, are emphases/concentration areas from which students select the professional paths that best fit their needs. Exercise Science and Recreation meet requirements for the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP), which is a tuition discount program for non-resident students to attend Pittsburg State University. Students who have been selected to receive the MSEP discount will be charged 150 percent of resident tuition rates. Residents from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wisconsin are eligible.

Welcome to Health, Human Performance and Recreation (HHPR).  The Department of HHPR offers a wide range of specialized areas. From physical education, to dance, to hospitality management, HHPR is here to help students find the appropriate specialization area in health, human performance or recreation.

The Department of HHPR offers undergraduate degrees with majors in Physical Education, Recreation and Exercise Science.

The Department of HHPR offers five undergraduate minors and three certificate areas. Minors include Coaching, Dance, Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Recreation.  Certificates in Coaching, Dance, and Hospitality Management are also available to students.

The Department of HHPR offers an online Master of Science degree for students interested in advanced studies. Students must complete one emphasis area: Health Human Performance and Recreation, Human Performance and Wellness, or Sport and Leisure Management.

The Ability Lab at Pittsburg State University serves as an experiential classroom to provide students majoring in Therapeutic Recreation opportunities to build the skills needed to pursue careers as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists.

The Applied Physiology Laboratory (APL) at Pittsburg State University serve as a student- and research-driven educational center dedicated to preparing students in the Exercise Science Program to pursue careers as Physical and Occupational Therapists, Physicians, Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Specialists, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (NSCA-CSCS), Certified Clinical Exercise Specialists (CES) or Certified Personal Trainers (CPT), and/or Master’s or Doctoral Graduate Students.

Recreation Accreditation Documents

Pittsburg State University's Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation Programs are accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT). COAPRT accredits baccalaureate programs in parks, recreation, tourism, sport management, event management, therapeutic recreation, and leisure studies offered at regionally accredited institutions within the United States and its territories, and at nationally accredited institutions in Canada and Mexico.
