Overview


The Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation offers the Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Physical Education. Students may choose a minor or certificate to accompany the PE major. Minors include coaching, dance, exercise science, hospitality management, and recreation. Certificate areas include coaching, dance, and hospitality management. Students choosing to complete a minor must select one from a discipline appropriate to teacher preparation.

Unique to the major in Physical Education is the opportunity to complete a minor or certificate. Minors include coaching, dance, exercise science, hospitality management, and recreation. Certificate areas include coaching, dance, and hospitality management. Students choosing to complete a minor must select one from a discipline appropriate to teacher preparation.

Students earning a major in Physical Education will complete courses in the theory and practice of physical education in order to be prepared to teach physical education, pre-kindergarten through grade 12. 

Students completing the major in Physical Education will have the knowledge and ability to work in such positions as:

  • Elementary, middle, and high school physical education
  • Middle and high school athletics

There are opportunities to gain physical education experience while taking classes:

  • Various university and area dance groups
  • Field experiences in area schools
  • Substitute teaching in area schools

About Health, Human Performance, and Recreation Department


The Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation (HHPR) is located in the new Student Recreation Center. The HHPR faculty possess a wide array of specializations. The department offers undergraduate degree programs in Exercise Science, Recreation Services, Sport and Hospitality Management, and Physical Education, seven minors and certificates in Dance, Coaching, and Hospitality Management, as well as a graduate program in HHPR. Within each of the degree programs, there are emphases/concentration areas from which students select the professional paths that best fit their needs.
