Pittsburg State University’s English major provides students the opportunity to select from five emphases: Creative Writing, English Education, English Language and Teaching, Professional Writing, and Literature and Culture.
The Bachelor of Arts in English at Pittsburg State University is designed for students who enjoy the challenge of analyzing great works of British, American, and international authors, of engaging with the ideas and themes found in the best that has been thought and said, and of tracing the grand arcs of literary history. Although students take courses in grammar and writing, the majority of the courses focus on literature, including major authors and time periods, genres, themes, and special topics in literature from around the world.
Recent graduates have found careers as professional writers, grant writers, editors, web content developers, legal assistants, community college academic advisers, and managers in different kinds of businesses and organizations. Many of our graduates go on to M.F.A., Ph.D., or other professional programs.
The Department of English and Modern Languages offers baccalaureate degrees and a master’s degree program. Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs are offered in English and in Modern Languages.
