PEERS role

Pitt Encouragement and Educational Resource Specialists (PEERS) assist instructors in the Gorilla Gateway and International Transitions classroom.

Pitt CARES leader

Pitt CARES Leaders welcome freshmen and transfer students to Pitt State during orientation. They answer questions about student life, facilitate icebreakers, and foster connections.

Leadership Role Requirements



  • Be enrolled as a full-time student
  • Be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
  • Be able to provide new students with the skills necessary to be more successful in their academic, professional, and social lives.

Pitt CARES Leader

  • Be in good standing with Pitt State
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student
  • Have a graduation date no earlier than July
  • Be willing to serve as an enthusiastic representative of Pittsburg State University
  • Availability Monday-Friday during the month of June


Scholarships are awarded to PEERS. 1 credit hour is earned after Spring training. 

Pitt CARES Leader

Bi-weekly, hourly pay is earned during orientation sessions. 1 credit hour of course credit is awarded for the completion of the CARES training. An optional 1 credit hour is earned during summer orientation Housing is provided for out-of-town students for orientation days worked.


Training begins in the Spring semester. Attend Gateway courses as a PEERS leader in the following Fall semester. 

Pitt CARES Leader

Students selected as Pitt CARES leaders will attend a training class throughout the Spring semester. Plan to be available Monday-Friday during the month of June for freshmen orientation.

Application Deadline


Instructors and mentors submit nominations in October and November.

Pitt CARES Leader

Pitt CARES Leader applications open in October for the following summer. Applications will be available in Gorilla Engage.
