PSU-Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory
The Greenbush Observatory, operated by Pittsburg State University and the Greenbush Area Education Organization (GAO), offers students, researchers and the community a chance to explore the night sky with a powerful classical Cassegrain telescope.
About the Observatory
The Greenbush Observatory features a classical Cassegrain telescope with a 61 cm (24 inch) primary mirror and a focal ratio of f/15. The telescope has been in operation since August 1996, providing valuable hands-on learning and research opportunities for the PSU community.
History
In 1993, Pittsburg State University acquired the telescope from New Mexico State University. The telescope was designed by Clyde Tombaugh, the astronomer who discovered Pluto. In 1996, the observatory was constructed through a partnership between Pittsburg State University, Greenbush, the Craw-Kan Telephone Cooperative, and 30 school districts in the area.
Visit and Events
The Greenbush Observatory hosts public star parties and other events throughout the year. For upcoming dates and details, visit the Greenbush Star Parties website.All events are free and open to the community.
Accessibility and Use
Daytime and nighttime observations are possible, and the facility is handicap accessible. The observatory also works in conjunction with programming at the Greenbush Science Education Center, offering educational opportunities for all ages.
