The Master of Science in Reading, Reading Specialist Licensure program focuses on preparing licensed teachers from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for Reading Specialist Licensure. Graduate students in this program leave with the knowledge, skills, and strategies required to enhance their ability as a reading specialist. The program is based on the Kansas Literacy Standards and the International Literacy Association’s Standards for Reading Professionals. The program is fully accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education and CAEP.

The Master of Science in Reading with an emphasis in Reading Specialist Licensure program includes 39 graduate credit hours completely ONLINE. The program was created for the busy classroom teacher. All assignments, practicum, and apprenticeship were designed to be completed in whatever grade level you teach. The program can be completed in seven semesters by taking two courses per semester and the apprenticeship in the last semester. Successful completion of this program and the Praxis Literacy examination can result in a Kansas Literacy Specialist License.

The candidates in Master of Science in Reading, Reading Specialist Licensure program leave with the knowledge, skills, and strategies required to enhance their ability as a:

  • Title I Reading Specialist from PreK-Grade 12
  • District or Building level leader as a reading teacher, instructional specialist, or literacy coach
  • Community College reading and language arts teacher
  • Doctoral student in reading and language arts (master’s level preparation)

The program is open to out-of-state or international candidates. Coursework in this program may be transferred to other states with the approval of the appropriate licensing agency. 

There is one practicum in the program which can be completed in the candidate’s classroom. Literacy topics that interest the candidate can be researched in the Methods of Research course. This course is based on the principles of action research. Action research assists the classroom teacher to focus on a question or topic in order to improve the quality of literacy teaching, curriculum, or assessment.  Apprenticeship is the capstone course where candidates explore in depth contextual factors affecting their students, the referral process for additional reading assistance, participation in developing IEPs, participation in literacy organizations, and exploration of potential sources for grants and manuscript submissions.
