This program will give the students the ability to think critically, operate various types of scientific equipment, analyze data, and interpret findings from laboratory experiments or research. It is the hands-on nature of this program that will prepare students for careers in industry or postgraduate studies in materials science.

Options available for the degree include:

Option I: Thesis
This option is designed to prepare students for a doctoral program, advanced professional careers, or for students wanting to complete an in-depth research experience.

Option II: Non-Thesis

This option is designed to provide a research experience that can include a specific problem, creative and aesthetic efforts such as performances, exhibits, or creative programs, or an internship.

Our graduates are prepared for a variety of careers in industry, academia, or government. Students earning a graduate degree will be well positioned to be accepted into a doctoral program or enter the workforce. Our graduates are qualified for a variety of options:

  • Ph.D. program candidates for materials science, chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, and related fields
  • Research and development: natural and synthetic or composite materials, metals, alloys, rubber, ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, and glasses
  • Materials science-related industries job: defense, electronic materials, energy, polymers, biomedical, semiconductor, and related fields
  • Many more

The mean annual wage for materials scientists is $101,910, according to the United States Department of Labor.

This is an interdisciplinary program involving two colleges: College of Arts and Sciences and College of Technology.
