Overview

Pitt State’s Intensive English Program is dedicated to educating and instilling in its students the English reading, listening, speaking, writing, and grammar to succeed not only in a university classroom, but beyond in professional and everyday life. Through quality classroom instruction and cultural activities, the IEP program provides opportunities for students to have a true American experience.

IEP is a full-time program featuring two 16-week sessions during the academic year and one 10-week session during the summer. Classes are offered at three levels: Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced. (All levels may not be offered each semester. This is dependent upon enrollment and staffing.)

The Intensive English Program’s focus

Our instructors are experts in working with students with a myriad of backgrounds, ages, cultures, and English levels. Each instructor holds at least a master’s degree in teaching English as a foreign language (not all have ESL), as a result, they are able to meet the student’s needs, while providing the classroom standards to fulfilling the “Intensive” part of IEP. The students spend approximately 18 hours per week in class taking courses in grammar, reading, listening/speaking, writing, and academic preparation.

Who is in the Intensive English Program?

US higher-education institutes require either a TOEFL, PTE, or IELTS score as part of their admission requirements. Pitt State’s Intensive English Program gives students conditional admission, allowing them to move on into undergraduate or graduate coursework upon completion of the highest level of IEP (for most programs). Additionally, successful completion is the equivalent of a 550 TOEFL score and can be substituted for the TOEFL requirement (for most programs).

As a result, most of the students who join PSU’s IEP are those missing the needed language requirement but have a passion and drive to increase their English ability so they can achieve their academic goals.

The IEP also welcomes students who wish to improve their English for personal or professional reasons.
