Pittsburg State University’s media production program offers students the perfect mix of advanced communication theory and hands-on experience. Students have the opportunity to take what they learn in the classroom and develop skills through live broadcast and streamcast productions of university events such as athletics, theater, music concerts, speaker series, and much more. Successful graduates will have the skills necessary to succeed in both the traditional and digital realms of broadcast communication.

Students learn from award-winning media production professionals who understand today’s world of communication. Unlike other programs that make you wait until your final year of study to touch broadcast equipment, Pittsburg State students get hands-on experience during their first year. Students annually produce more than 100 live productions, ranging from international competitions to locally-produced newscasts. Our productions aren't just class projects, they are real broadcasts consumed by more than 100,000 individuals every year. In fact, Pittsburg State students annually produce the live broadcast of the MIAA Basketball Tournament in Kansas City which is aired in seven states. It doesn't get more real than Pittsburg State Broadcasting.

Pittsburg State operates a cable-access channel and streams almost all of its productions online via Our variety of outlets allows students to learn about every broadcasting role. From director to camera operator, you’ll experience it at Pittsburg State University.

Pittsburg State graduates are prepared for a variety of careers in industry, academia, and government. Students will have the knowledge and skills to pursue a career in the rapidly developing field of digital communication as well as the more traditional broadcast areas such as television, radio, and production. Pittsburg State alumni have enjoyed successful careers with companies and organizations such as NBC, the NFL Network, ESPN, the Kansas City Chiefs Radio Network, the Kansas City Royals, and the Phoenix Suns.

The median annual wage for media and communication professionals was $54,780 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Media production students will have opportunities for scholarships and internships. Pittsburg State’s media production program has contacts with regional production companies and organizations such as Spectrum Sports in Kansas City, the Kansas Speedway, Sporting KC, and many more.

The Department of Communication offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees within a collaborative and collegial environment.
