What is a physical therapist?

A physical therapist helps patients with physical impairments and disabilities. Their services improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit disabilities. Physical therapists use a variety of techniques and treatments for patients to reach their maximum level of function:

  • exercise routines
  • manual therapy
  • assistive devices

Physical therapists play a critical role in helping individuals recover from injury and illness. They also promote overall health and wellness.

Classroom topics in Pre-Physical Therapy

Curriculum topics unique to the pre-physical therapy emphasis track include:

  • Biological sciences
  • Exercise science
  • Therapeutic intervention
  • Wellness strategies

Our students participate in lab work, hands-on clinical experience, and observation of licensed physical therapists.

How to become a physical therapist

A pre-professional program provides students with the necessary coursework and preparation for pursuing a career as a physical therapist. Gain a solid foundation in the basic sciences and an in-depth study of physical therapy theories and practices.

The pre-physical therapy emphasis track prepares students for entry into a professional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. This program is required to become a licensed physical therapist.

How long does it take to become a physical therapist?

Becoming a physical therapist typically takes 7-8 years of education and training, including both pre-professional and professional components.
