The Department of Music offers a Master of Music degree, with a variety of emphasis areas, including performance, conducting, and music education. Within the area of performance, students may select a vocal emphasis. This degree is designed to prepare individuals for professional advancement or for entry into further study at the doctoral level. 

Awards for full-time graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Recipients of these positions will take active leadership roles in the department's ensembles, teaching and accompanying private lessons, and/or serving as an assistant to the ensemble director.

In addition to classroom and studio work, students in the vocal performance graduate program are afforded multiple performance opportunities ranging from opera and oratorio roles to solo recitals and chamber music concerts. Graduate voice students will also receive hands-on opportunities to develop their teaching skills including applied lessons, coursework, and assisting ensemble directors.

The exceptional voice area faculty at Pittsburg State University are dedicated to the development of their craft. As teachers, they are continuously involved in research to stay current with pedagogical development. Additionally, the voice faculty are active performers both regionally and nationally, appearing with critically ensembles and companies.

The voice area at PSU strives to maintain a competitive yet supportive performance learning environment. The departmental faculty collaboratively support students as they pursue their degrees.

  • Meet Pittsburg State University Entrance Requirements (see below)
  • Audition and Interview 
  • Complete Diagnostic Exams in Music Theory and Music History

About Music Department

The Department of Music at Pittsburg State University is an accredited member of NASM, the National Association of Schools of Music.

Our department averages 100 music majors and 40 minors, and 200 non-music majors per semester, and is staffed by 13 full-time and 9 part-time faculty members.
