Overview

The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in Music Education, preparing students to teach and supervise music in school settings ranging from preschool to senior high school. Music education students work towards State of Kansas certification in K-12 schools.

Music education students generally choose instrumental or vocal music as their area of emphasis. In addition to in-depth study in the student's major applied area, the program provides comprehensive coursework in the various aspects of music education: conducting, teaching methods, and development of proficiency in woodwind, brass, string, piano, voice, and percussion instruments. Students explore and develop teaching skills through early field experiences in classrooms.
