Pittsburg State's Bradley School of Nursing recognizes final MSN class

After 24 years, the school celebrated its final five graduates from the Master of Science in Nursing program. The MSN program will no longer be offered due to the addition of a new Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

The moment was especially bittersweet for the Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing’s Director, Cheryl Giefer.

“I was in the MSN program’s very first Family Nurse Practitioner class,” said Giefer. “It’s a little sad to see the final class walk through the door. But, then I look at our DNP program and think of how far we’ve come over the past quarter century. I can’t help but smile.”

Members of the final MSN graduating class came together one final time to share memories and plans for their future.

Lindsey Ratcliff, who now lives in Emporia, came to Pittsburg State after earning her undergraduate degree at a larger university.

“I can’t say enough about this program,” Ratcliff said. “I earned my BSN from a large university. Isat in a classroom with 120 other students. Here, the faculty know you by name and will call you at home. It’s like a small family.”

Similar stories were shared by each graduate as they discussed their time at Pittsburg State. As for what the future holds, every graduate was looking forward to being able to work as nurse practitioners, and most were staying in rural areas.

“The impact you can have on each individual patent is greater in the provider role,” Christian Bedore said. “That’s why I entered this program. I started out as an x-ray technician, then became a registered nurse and now this. With every role, I’ve wanted to do more for my patients.”

While Pittsburg State’s MSN program has been phased out, the Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing now offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice program. The DNP program recently received full accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
