Residence halls get wifi upgrade

This summer, the Information Technology Services Department is installing wireless Internet access points in each of the university’s 600 residence hall rooms. Tim Pearson, ITS assistant director, said the new access points should improve wifi connectivity in many ways.

“With access points in each room, students should notice cleaner, smoother and faster wifi speeds throughout the residence halls,” Pearson said.

Pearson said increasing the number of access points will help reduce signal interference often caused by a high number of wireless devices.

“In the past decade, the number of wireless devices that students bring to the residence halls has increased exponentially,” Pearson said. “Before now, we’d have multiple devices in multiple rooms trying to use the same access point. By adding access points in each room, devices will not have to look far for a strong signal.”

The project is also providing valuable educational experiences for six PSU students who are helping install the hardware. Pearson said he was approached by Pete Rosen, chair of Accounting & Computer Information Systems, who asked if some of the computer information systems students could help with the project.

“I thought this would be a tremendous experience for our students to have real-world experience helping with the development of a wifi network here on campus,” Rosen said. “I’m very appreciative to ITS for allowing the students to participate.”

Pearson said the students have proven to be “remarkable” coworkers.

“You couldn’t ask for a better team to work with, students or professionals,” Pearson said. “The students have tremendous work ethic, and they’re excited to learn. You can tell they take great pride in their school and the opportunity to make it better.”
