KTC hosts 4th annual Construction Expo

The Pittsburg State School of Construction hosted its fourth annual Construction Expo on Wednesday, April 6.

The event, which took place at the Kansas Technology Center, offered students the opportunity to operate various pieces of construction-related heavy equipment, including simulators, a skid-steer and power trowel.

Along with the heavy equipment portion, students also got the chance to meet and network with representatives from more than 45 construction-related companies.

“The overall goal of the expo is to expose our students to the types of things they’ll encounter in the workforce,” said Assistant Professor Seth O’Brien. “There is only so much you can learn in the classroom. It’s important for our students to get out there, run the equipment, meet the professionals and put themselves in a position to get that job after they graduate.”

As part of the expo, Associated General Contractors of America Chief Economist Ken Simonson spoke to students and faculty in S102 of the Kansas Technology Center. Simonson is a nationally-recognized speaker on economic trends in the construction industry.

“We were thrilled to have Mr. Simonson on campus to speak to our students about the latest trends in the construction industry,” O’Brien said. “His insight was an incredibly valuable addition to this year’s expo.”

Simonson’s visit was sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of Kansas and the Pitt State Associated General Contractors student chapter.
