Pitt State pilots new summer schedule

Some Pittsburg State University employees are getting up a little earlier these days and some are getting home a little later as the university experiments with a new, flexible work week during the summer months.

Beginning this week, the university’s official business hours are 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. until noon on Fridays. Employees are still working their normal total hours each week, but have been given a range of options as to how that can be done. Each office has developed a schedule that works best for them while continuing to provide all of the services that students and the community expect.

University officials approved the trial run of a new summer schedule after employees suggested in Strategic Planning Task Force forums last year that the campus offer flexible work schedules during the summer. A 14-member work group reviewed several similar programs at other universities and formally recommended the summer schedule to the President’s Council last November. The President’s Council approved the recommendation in January of this year.

Although departmental and administrative offices will close at noon on Fridays throughout the summer, some critical services, such as Axe Library, University Police and the Student Recreation Center, will remain open on Friday afternoons.
