All-female band headlines Jazz Festival concert

The 41st annual Pittsburg State University Jazz Festival concert, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6, will feature one of the only all-female big band jazz ensembles in the U.S. DIVA will join PSU’s Jazz Ensemble on the stage at Pittsburg’s Memorial Auditorium, for the closing concert of the festival, which draws scores of high school jazz bands from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

DIVA, based in New York and directed by drummer Sherrie Maricle, performs a wide array of songs, including jazz standards, swing and pop music. The band has recorded more than 12 albums and performed across North and South America and Europe.

They’ve played the “National Anthem” at Yankee Stadium and have been featured many times on CNN’s “Art’s Break” and on CBS “Sunday Morning,” with Charles Osgood. They have also been honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Tickets for the concert are $15 for adults and $10 for PSU faculty and staff, military or veterans with a valid military card, and for persons 17 and under or 65 and older. PSU students are admitted for free. Tickets are available at the PSU Ticket Office, 1701 S. Homer, 620-235-4796, www.pittstate.edu/tickets.
