Former First Lady Laura Bush to speak at PSU

Pittsburg State University today announced that former First Lady Laura Bush will visit PSU in the spring as part of the university’s Women in Government Lecture Series. Mrs. Bush will share remarks on education, literacy, volunteerism and human rights on April 22 at the new Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.

“We’re thrilled to have a speaker of the former first lady’s caliber as part of our inaugural season at the Bicknell Center,” said Pittsburg State University President Steve Scott. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students and community and indicative of the quality of programming our new facility allows us to offer.”

Details on ticket pricing and availability will be announced early in the 2015 spring semester.

The Women in Government Lecture Series was established at Pittsburg State University in 2001 through a generous gift from the Helen S. Boylan Foundation to the PSU Foundation. The Boylan Foundation provided a special grant to bring the former first lady to the PSU campus.

One of the most beloved and admired American first ladies, for decades Laura Bush has championed key issues in the fields of education, health care, and human rights. The author of the best-selling memoir, “Spoken From The Heart,” Mrs. Bush also founded the Texas Book Festival and the National Book Festival in Washington D.C. Today, as the chair of the Women’s Initiative at the George W. Bush Institute, Mrs. Bush continues her work on global health care innovations, empowering women in emerging democracies, education reform and supporting the men and women who have served America’s military.

Past participants in the Women in Government Series have included speakers such as former Kansas Governor and United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius; Human Rights Activist Kerry Kennedy; legendary White House Correspondent Helen Thomas; Kansas Supreme Court Justice Kay McFarland and Native American Indian Activist Winona LaDuke.

“Laura Bush continues our tradition of welcoming acclaimed political leaders to our campus,” said Kathleen Flannery, Women in Government committee member. “These women are helping shape our nation’s political future and we’re excited to be able to include the former first lady among our honored guests.
