Students mark Alcohol Awareness Week

Gorillas in Your Midst, a peer health education group at Pittsburg State University, will observe Alcohol Awareness Week, Oct. 6-12, with a number of events designed to educate students and encourage healthy behavior.

From 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, the group will staff an information table on the PSU Oval where they will share positive ways PSU students “Do the Gorilla Thing” when it comes to alcohol. Included in the information will be harm reduction strategies for students to use. The group will take the same message to Gibson Dining Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, Gorillas in Your Midst will sponsor a presentation, “I Got Lucky,” by motivational speaker Scott Maloney. Maloney shares his personal story of a nearly fatal fall from a rooftop caused by a night of drinking in 2004. As a result of the fall, Maloney suffered a traumatic brain injury and doctors didn’t expect him to survive.

Modern medicine, months of therapy and hard work brought Maloney back from near death, however, and today he visits college campuses to share his story in the hope that he can prevent others from making the same mistake.

Maloney’s presentation, sponsored by Student Prevention and Wellness and Eagle Beverage Co., will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Overman Student Center.
