Howle, Natenberg present faculty recital

Baritone Patrick Howle, with pianist Reena Berger Natenberg, will present a free faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in Pittsburg State University’s McCray Hall, 205 E. Lindburg.

The concert will include songs by Liszt and Copland and solo piano works by Liszt.

Patrick Howle mug shotHowle, an instructor in PSU’s Department of Music, received his bachelor of music degree in vocal performance from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in vocal performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music.

Howle has performed in more than 25 productions with the Ohio Light Opera and most recently appeared as Marat in the world premier of Robert Ward's, “A Friend of Napoleon” with the same company. He was a finalist in the Jessie Kneisel lieder competition, a winner of the Orpheus National Vocal Competition, and has sung for renowned soprano Reneé Fleming in master class. His many recordings with the Ohio Light Opera can be heard on both the Albany and Operetta Archives labels.

Natenberg, a professor in PSU’s Department of Music, received a bachelor’s degree in music from Tel Aviv University, a master’s degree in music from the New England Conservatory, and a Ph.D. in music from the Université de Montréal. She has performed extensively as a soloist and a chamber musician throughout North America, South America, Asia and in Europe. She was featured on radio and television, including on Boston's radio station WGBH in the program "Off the Record."

Reena Berger Natenberg mug shotIn 2012, Natenberg and Howle released a collaborative CD, "Carte Postale," featuring the songs of French composer, Francis Poulenc. This project was funded by grants from the Kansas Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In 2013, Natenberg and Howle performed at Carnegie Hall. For that performance, they included a number of vocal music pieces by Poulenc, a set of vocal works by Johannes Brahms, a solo piano piece by Franz Liszt and another solo piece by contemporary French Canadian composer Denis Gougeon.
