Nursing students learn from Farm Show experience

One of the first tents visitors to the Four-State Farm show south of Pittsburg may visit could be a lifesaver.

Pittsburg State University nursing students, in partnership with Via Christi Hospital, are staffing an exhibit near the entrance of the Farm Show where visitors can get a blood pressure check and pick up valuable information about a wide range of health issue.

Karen Tompkins-Dobbs, an instructor in PSU’s Irene Bradley School of Nursing, said the students have worked to prepare information on topics such as exposure to UV radiation, tick-borne illnesses, hypertension, farm accidents and nutrition.

The students are all enrolled in a class entitled “Client and Family.”

Education is a big part of the job of being a nurse, she said, and the students will learn from their interaction with community members.

The Four-State Farm Show runs through Sunday.
