Student Center work begins

Workers carefully removed the cornerstone on Pittsburg State University’s Overman Student Center Wednesday morning as a major expansion and renovation of the building has begun.

For 64 years, the cornerstone has served as a historical reminder to passersby. It will be displayed in the renovated and expanded building, which is expected to be completed in 2015 at a total cost of about $14 million.

PSU’s student center was formally dedicated in 1951. Additions were added in 1963 and 1995. The current project will add 31,000 square feet to the building and renovate an almost equal amount in the existing building. Workers began installing construction fencing around the building soon after the groundbreaking ceremony on April 30. The pace of the work is expected to pick up sharply following spring commencement exercises Friday and Saturday.
