PSU student publications haul in awards at state conference
For the fourth consecutive year, the Kanza, Pittsburg State University’s student yearbook, earned a gold medal and the All-Kansas Award at the Kansas Collegiate Media annual state conference. PSU’s student newspaper, the Collegio, earned a silver medal. This year’s All-Kansas award for student newspapers went to the Collegian at Kansas State.
PSU students earned numerous honors at the conference, held in Wichita on April 13.
Kenzi Jordan, Kanza editor in chief, received first place awards in feature photography and illustration; second place awards in news/event photography and sports-page design; a third place award in page design; and honorable mentions in sports-action photography, news photography and page design.
Katie Wright, who served as Kanza managing editor from 2013-2014, received first-place awards in headline design and cover design; a second-place award in page design; and honorable mentions in feature page design and sports page design.
Michael Bauer received a first-place award in sports season writing, Garett McCullough received an honorable mention in sports season writing and Marcus Clem received a first-place award in news/event writing.
Collegio staffers took home 20 individual honors.
Marcus Clem, Collegio editor in chief, received a first-place award in news reporting, an honorable mention in editorial writing and had the highest score in the conference’s on-site copy editing contest for four-year institutions.
Haley Reynolds, photo editor, received a second-place award in news photography and an honorable mention in feature photography.
Kenzi Jordan, who served as Collegio photo editor in 2013, received a first-place award in advertising. Kelley Macek received a second-place award in sports photography, Mandy Reno received a third-place award in sports photography, Chris Medved received an honorable mention in news photography, Ahmad Eiad Alsayeed received a first-place award in column writing and Alberto Soto received a second-place award in column writing.
Jessica Sewing, Collegio design chief, received a first-place award in page design and three honorable mentions: two in page design and one in headline writing. Jay Benedict, who served as Collegio editor in chief from 2012-2013, received a second-place award in feature writing and a third-place award in news reporting.
Casey Beal received a second-place award in page design and Carl J. Bachus received an honorable mention in feature writing and another in review writing.
Finally, The Collegio staff was honored with a second place award in the special section category.
