Helicopters as classrooms: Cadets fly Thursday

Usually students go to the lab to learn, but on Thursday, March 13, the lab will come to the students.

Pittsburg State University ROTC cadets will learn all about UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters when the Army workhorses land on the PSU campus. Students participating in the Air Mobility Lab I will learn how to safely and quickly board a transport helicopter and will fly around the area.

The Blackhawks are from the Kansas Army National Guard's 108th Aviation Battalion in Topeka. One of the pilots scheduled to fly Thursday is Maj. Josh Urban, a 2004 PSU grad who has participated in previous training missions at his alma mater.

“It is always enjoyable to come back and work with the young cadets,” Urban said. “I remember what it’s like.”

An added component to this year’s training will be a brief contracting ceremony for new cadets, officials said.
