Panel to examine state of sports journalism

The Pittsburg State University Department of Communication will host a panel discussion on “Sports Journalism in the Age of New Media” from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3 in 107 Grubbs Hall. A reception will follow from 8-9 p.m. in the lobby.

Panelists Mike Arbuckle, Mark Schremmer and Troy Comeau will discuss the evolution and current state of sports journalism and the challenges presented by the rise of sports talk radio, 24-hour cable sports channels, fan message boards, Facebook and Twitter.

Panelist Mike Arbuckle currently serves as senior adviser to Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore in the areas of scouting and player development. He has worked in major league baseball in various positions for more than 36 years.

Prior to joining the Royals in 2008, Arbuckle worked as a scouting supervisor for the Atlanta Braves in the 1980s and as assistant general manager and director of scouting and player development for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1992 to 2008. In Philadelphia he was frequently a source for regional and national sports reporters, including Ken Rosenthal (Fox Sports and MLB Network) and Jayson Stark (ESPN).

Mark Schremmer is a sports reporter for the Joplin Globe and has worked in print journalism since 2000. He covers high school sports across the region as well as the Missouri Southern Lions. Before joining the Globe in 2012, Schremmer, a PSU alumnus, served as assistant news editor and sports columnist at the Topeka Capital-Journal for five years. He was previously the sports editor and managing editor at the Pittsburg Morning Sun.

Troy Comeau has been the director of broadcasting in the Department of Communication at Pittsburg State since 2003. Under his guidance, communication majors have received numerous awards on the state and national stages for their work in audio and video production. His Sports Broadcasting class has consistently produced national finalists for Best Live Sports Production in the Collegiate Broadcasting student awards. Comeau, who has taught at Pittsburg State since 1998, was honored as one of three recipients of the University’s Outstanding Faculty Award for 2013.

Mark Arbuckle, associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Communication, will be the moderator.
