PSU launches Faculty-Staff Campaign

Pittsburg State University faculty and staff gathered in the Overman Student Center’s U-Club Monday afternoon to launch the 2013-14 Faculty-Staff Campaign. This year’s theme, “Give a latte,” was chosen to highlight how giving just the price of a latte or soft drink each pay period can make a big difference for students and the university.

PSU President Steve Scott noted that 418 members of the faculty and staff made gifts to the campaign last year.

“That represents 43 percent of our faculty and staff,” Scott said. “That’s much better than many institutions but we’d like to see that even higher.”

Money raised through the Faculty-Staff campaign supports scholarships, academic programs and faculty development. President Scott said gifts through the campaign had helped the PSU Foundation dramatically increase its scholarship aid in recent years.

“Not long ago we felt good about giving $2 million in scholarship aid each year and this year we’ll be over $3 million,” Scott said.

Guy Owings, Accounting Department professor emeritus and one of the campaign co-chairpersons, said the university had made great strides in increasing both the number and amounts of scholarships.

“Things are different now,” Owings said. “That’s pretty important to me.”

This year’s Faculty-Staff Campaign co-chairpersons are: Owings; David Adams, assistant director for campus activities, Overman Student Center; and Debbie Thompson, senior administrative assistant, Office of Admission.
