PSU hosts Midwest Trumpet Festival Oct. 13-14

Students from the area, scholars and internationally acclaimed performers will come together at Pittsburg State University for the fifth annual Midwest Trumpet Festival Oct. 13-14 in McCray Hall.

Festival Director Todd Hastings, a member of the PSU Department of Music faculty and a trumpet performer and clinician, said the event allows students to learn from some of the finest trumpet instructors and performers in the U.S.

Joe Burgstaller publicity photoThis year, the festival features trumpeter Joe Burgstaller, who has performed with Canadian Brass and the Meridian Arts Ensemble. Burgstaller has performed in front of more than 40 orchestras, in more than 50 music festivals, and has performed and taught at more than 80 universities, conservatories and colleges.

Burgstaller’s extensive discography includes his solo CDs “License to Thrill” and “The Virtuoso Trumpet” and three Top-10 Billboard hits with the Canadian Brass. Burgstaller tours worldwide as a soloist, with his hit crossover group BM4 (BurgstallerMartignon4), with the N.Y. Brass Arts Trio, and as a clinician and teacher. He is on the faculty at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., where he teaches trumpet and chamber music.

Burstaller will conduct master classes on both days and will perform a free evening concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall.

The Crowder Jazz Orchestra, with special guests, will also present a free concert, at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall.

Hastings said the guest artist faculty for the trumpet festival features some of the top educators and performers in the region. They include: Alan Hood, associate professor of trumpet, University of Denver; Iskander Akhmadullin, associate professor of trumpet, University of Missouri; Natalia Bolshakova, adjunct professor of piano/accompanying, University of Missouri; Ryan Gardner, assistant professor of trumpet, Oklahoma State University; Marc Reed, assistant professor of trumpet, Fort Lewis (Co.) College; Ryan Gardner, assistant professor of trumpet, Oklahoma State University, Keith Benjamin, professor of trumpet, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance; David Cooper, associate professor of trumpet, University of Wisconsin-Platteville; Bill Richardson, associate professor of trumpet, Northwest Missouri State University; Keith Winking, professor of trumpet, Texas State University; Grant Peters, professor of music (trumpet). Missouri State University; and Tito Carrillo, assistant professor of jazz trumpet, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
