Marketing professor eager for first international teaching experience

For Lynn Murray, living abroad has always been "one of those things you just have to do."

"It's been on my bucket list for a long time," said Murray, associate professor of management and marketing in the Kelce College of Business. "It's been a dream of mine to live abroad and experience new cultures."

Very soon, Murray will get thLynn Murray, marketing professorat chance and then some as she travels to Paraguay for a month to teach Introduction to Business at Catolica Universidad in Asuncion, Paraguay. The opportunity comes as part of the Pittsburg State in Paraguay Program, a long-standing partnership between Pitt State and the Paraguayan university.

"I'm a little nervous," Murray said, "but it's a good nervous. I've never lived or taught abroad, so this will be a new experience for me. I'm very excited about it, and I plan to learn as much from the Paraguayan students as they learn from me. It will be like living a dream."

As part of the Pitt State in Paraguay Program, PSU offers undergraduate coursework on the campus of Catolica Universidad in Asuncion, Paraguay.  These general education undergraduate courses are taught in English. Students are able to take up to 25 credit hours per year for two years, for a total of 50 hours of coursework.  Students can complete their degree program on the Pittsburg campus. These academic credits, which will apply toward a bachelor’s degree at PSU, may transfer to other Kansas or U.S. universities and colleges.

The Kansas Paraguay Partnership (KPP) was created in 1968, along with its Paraguayan counterpart, the Comite’ Paraguay Kansas (CPK).  Pittsburg State University has received numerous students from Paraguay over the years. Many Pittsburg State students have also visited the Paraguayan university as part of study abroad programs.

Murray said she's looking forward to having her "eyes opened" by the experience.

"Travel broadens who you are and how you view the world," she said. "As this will be my first time living or teaching abroad, I'm ready to get there and just immerse myself in the culture. To me, that's the only way to do it. You just have to dive right in and appreciate the experience.

"I'm very fortunate," she said, "to be part of a university that provides for these opportunities. This is a very neat and valuable program."
