Farm Show a learning experience for PSU nurses and visitors

In addition to learning about the newest agricultural technology, visitors to the Four-State Farm Show are also learning about a wide variety of health issues thanks to students in Pittsburg State University’s “Client and Family Health Class.”

The PSU students are all registered nurses who are either completing a baccalaureate degree or beginning their master’s program, according to Barbara McClaskey, a professor in PSU’s School of Nursing.

McClaskey said the 24 PSU students are sharing a large tent near the entrance to the Farm Show with Via Christi Hospital. The PSU students are helping take free blood pressures and have information on a wide variety of subjects including hypertension, skin cancer, heat-related illnesses, safety, children’s health, cardiovascular disease, Lyme Disease, diet and overall healthy living.

McClaskey said working at the Farm Show gives students an opportunity to work directly with rural residents and better understand issues specific to rural patients.

“In addition to providing direct patient care, nurses are also often teachers and coaches,” McClaskey said. “Nurses help patients learn to manage their illnesses. They help them understand complicated medical terms and concepts and they teach them ways to prevent illness and live a healthier lifestyle.”

The Four-State Farm Show runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on July 20-21 and from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on July 22. It is located just south of Pittsburg on K-171.
