PSU hosts CHECK conference

More than 150 information technology professionals from the state’s colleges and universities will visit Pittsburg State University this week for the annual Conference on Higher Education Computing in Kansas (CHECK).

Conducted annually at one of the six regents universities in Kansas, the CHECK conference gives IT professionals a chance to network and learn about new technologies in the field.

The conference will take place Wednesday and Thursday, May 29-30.

“The CHECK conference gives IT professionals in higher education a chance to come together and learn from one another,” said Angela Neria, PSU’s chief information officer. “Whether it’s a big Division I school like KU or K-State or one of the state’s community colleges, we’re all trying to create the best possible technological environment on our campuses. So it’s always nice to meet and discuss new ideas and new ways of doing things.”

The conference kicks off at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday with a welcome address from PSU President Steve Scott inside the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall. Scott will be followed by the event’s keynote speaker, Joplin Schools Superintendent Dr. C.J. Huff. Huff, who is a PSU graduate, will discuss 21st century learning.

Attendees will then break up into groups to attend sessions on a variety of topics. The day will conclude with a 5:15 p.m. tour of the Kansas Technology Center.

Thursday’s activities will begin with more breakout sessions. Shortly before 1 p.m., attendees will travel to Joplin for a tour of the path of the May 22, 2011, tornado.

The tour will end at Joplin High School, where district faculty, students and technologists will discuss the role technology plays in education. District officials will also share their vision for construction that has begun on a new 400,000 square-foot high school to open in 2014.
