Veterans discuss their lives as students

After 11 years in the Army, Tina Valenzuela wasn’t sure what to expect when she returned to Pittsburg State University to pursue a degree in elementary education.

“I was kind of afraid the younger students would treat me like their mom,” she said.

But Valenzuela found students were warm and welcoming.

“The (traditional) students have been very collaborative with me,” said Valenzuela, who also noted that the younger students have also been interested in hearing about her military experience.

Valenzuela will be one of several veterans who will talk about their experience as PSU students at a student veteran panel discussion at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 22, in the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology in Hartman Hall. The veterans will talk about the challenges they face and how the Pitt State community can support its growing number of student veterans. A portion of the panel discussion will be dedicated to answering questions from the attendees.

The Student Veterans Panel is sponsored by PSU’s Tilford Group.
