Summer session enrollment opens

For Otis Kimball, the decision was all about one thing: graduating.

“If I take summer classes, I can graduate in December,” the senior psychology major from Nowata, Okla., said. “If I didn’t take summer classes, I would graduate in May. When I looked at it that way, summer school seemed more and more appealing.”

Kimball is one of the thousands of students who are expected to enroll in Pittsburg State University’s 2013 Summer Session. Open enrollment began Monday, April 1.

Pittsburg State offers more than 450 undergraduate and graduate summer courses, in a wide variety of disciplines. Courses are generally offered in four-week and eight-week sessions, although intersession and short courses are also available. Coursework begins on June 3, and the final general session ends on July 26.

Lynette Olson, PSU provost and vice president of academic affairs, said there are many benefits to enrolling in summer courses.

“One of the main benefits for our current students is that it allows them to jump ahead a little bit in terms of meeting their completion requirements for attaining their degrees,” she said. “It allows them to accelerate their program.”

Olson said many students use the summer session to take courses they can’t always fit into their fall or spring curriculum.

“That’s a major advantage for some of our students because it lets them take classes they want without having to pile on a huge course load during the fall or spring,” she said.

With more online course offerings than ever, the PSU summer session is also available to a large number of students who return to their hometowns during the summer.

“Our online program grows every year, and it’s quickly become one of the most popular options for our students,” Olson said. “We have a lot of students who go back home for the summer to work, and our online offerings allow them to take PSU courses from familiar PSU faculty.”
