Student group conducts free vehicle inspections

One of the main objectives of the Christian Automotive Majors group at Pittsburg State University is to serve the local community.

“And one of the best ways for us to do that is to utilize the skills we have in automotive technology,” Lance Stoltzfus, CAM president, said.

On Saturday, April 6, approximately 25 students in CAM combined their automotive skills and desire to serve to offer free vehicle inspections to local community members. The inspections, which covered areas ranging from tire tread to brake line condition, took place inside the automotive lab at PSU’s Kansas Technology Center.

Stoltzfus said the group inspected nearly 30 vehicles during the all-day event.

“We had a full schedule of inspections, which was great for us,” he said. “We very much want to be of service to the community and help where we can, and this was a great way for us to do that. I’m very pleased with the response and that we were able to help so many people.”

Randy Jones, the group’s faculty adviser, said the event also served as quality practice time for the students.

“This is wonderful for the students because it gives them a chance to serve while also putting their education to good use,” he said. “Any chance they have to take part in a real-world, hands-on experience only serves to enhance the educational experience they’re receiving at PSU.”
