Sororities, fraternities celebrate Greek Week

Members of Pittsburg State University’s nine sororities and fraternities are celebrating Greek Week this week with a variety of activities that are designed not only to be fun and show pride in their organizations, but also to support a good cause, as well.

The more than 400 members of PSU’s Greek organizations began their week by participating in Saturday’s BIG Event service project. On Monday, April 8, they will gather at 7 p.m. in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom for the Order of Omega Awards, which honor chapter leadership.

On Tuesday, April 9, the organizations will host Gorilla Games, a spoof on the original Olympic Games. The activities begin at 4:45 p.m. with the all-Greek photo in front of Russ Hall. The games begin at 5 p.m. on the lawn in front of Russ and move across the street at 6 p.m. to the parking lot on the west side of Broadway for a new event, the Red Bull Chariot Race.

“I am super excited for this event,” said Ellie Sheridan, who, with Brett Jacobson, is co-chairing Greek Week.

The organizations have constructed their own chariots for the race with the only requirements being two wheels and a strut. In addition to points for winning the race, the teams will be judged on construction and style. The winner of the race will receive an all-inclusive trip to Dallas from Red Bull for its 2013 Flugtag, an event sponsored by the energy drink company that imitates the quirky British Birdman Rally.

Greek Week continues on Wednesday, April 10, when members of the fraternal organizations will sell coffee from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the Oval. Money raised by the sale will support the Southeast Kansas Humane Society. Also that day, they will deliver fruit to academic departments as a way to say “thank you” to faculty.

Greek Week concludes on Friday, April 12, with the Airband and Greek God and Goddess competitions, which begin at 6 p.m. in the Weede PE Building.
