Students learn about poverty effects

Pittsburg State University students will attend a banquet Monday night, but not everyone is expected to leave satisfied. The type and amount of food the guests receive, where they may sit and even the type of service they get will depend upon whether they are labeled upper, middle or lower class when they enter the room.

The Hunger Banquet, a creation of Oxfam, is a powerful poverty awareness simulation, according to Kelsey Neiger, president of Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity. She said the goal is two-fold. First, the simulation brings awareness to students about the ways that poverty affects millions of Americans. Second, because students must pay $1 or bring canned goods to participate, the banquet also benefits the Wesley House food pantry.

The Hunger Banquet is sponsored by the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Alpha Phi Omega. It begins at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom.
