The Student Rec Center at Pittsburg State University is doing its part to reduce the amount of plastic going into the landfill. This week the recreation center installed five new water bottle filling stations that are already getting rave reviews from students.

“Students need to keep hydrated when they are exercising or participating in intramural sports,” said Vince Daino, director of campus recreation. “Often that comes from bottled water. Ideally, those are recycled or refilled, but too often, they end up in a landfill.”

The new filling stations allow students to refill their empty plastic bottles or, even better, fill reusable cups.

The response from students, Daino said, has been immediate.

“The students are raving about it,” Daino said. “We’re getting non-stop compliments.”

More important than the compliments, Daino said, is the satisfaction of knowing the Rec Center is doing its part to reduce the number of plastic bottles headed for the landfill.
