The Pittsburg State women’s basketball team has punched its ticket to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in San Antonio, Texas. The Gorillas earned the trip with a 79-67 win over Emporia State in the South Central Regional final on Monday, March 12, at Lee Arena in Topeka.
The Gorillas will play Shaw, who was the second seed in the Atlantic Region, at 6 p.m. (CDT) on Tuesday, March 20.
Pittsburg State’s Lizzy Jeronimus, who finished the game with 35 points and 10 rebounds, was named the South Central Regional Most Valuable Player. Drew Roberts was also named to the all-tournament team.
In addition to Jeronimus’ 35 points, Alexa Bordewick scored 15 points, all in the second half. Larissa Richards and Drew Roberts each added eight points, Brooke Conley, seven, Lauren Brown, four and Morgan Westhoff, two.
Pitt State trailed by only one at the half, 32-31, but were never down by more than seven.
The Gorillas came out of the locker room on fire, going on a 12-0 run to take a 43-32 lead with 17:01 to go. Emporia State did not hit its first shot in the second half until the 16:42 mark.
Pitt State did not allow Emporia State closer than four points, 50-46, through the rest of the game. The Gorillas took their largest lead of the game, 12 points, on free throw shots by Jeronimus and Roberts, with 1:43 and 1:02 left, respectively.
