School kicks off with Gorilla Warm-Ups, first week activities

August 20, 2010 12:00AM

It will be a busy weekend at Pittsburg State University as approximately 1,200 students move back to campus and thousands more back into the Pittsburg community.

Many university offices including Admission, Housing, Student Financial Assistance, and Gorilla Geeks will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide students with assistance as they get ready for classes to begin Monday. The Student Employment Office in Career Services will also be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Also this weekend, the university will sponsor Gorilla Warm-Ups, an annual tradition that brings new students together for fun and fellowship. On Sunday, Aug. 22, Gorilla Warm-Ups will begin on the Oval at 1:30 p.m. After checking in, students will take a tour of campus, pose en masse for a freshman class photo on the football field, and take turns ringing the historic bell near Axe Library - a rite of passage that marks the beginning of their PSU experience. From 6 -8 p.m., students will take part in a pool party at the Pittsburg Aquatic Center.

When classes begin Monday, PSU Campus Activities will offer events each day for students, including:

Monday, Aug. 23: The band Hotspur will perform at 8 p.m. on Cleveland Plaza.

Tuesday, Aug. 24: Welcome Back from Wal-Mart - from 9-11 p.m., Wal-Mart will be giving away goodie bags to students, and the Residence Hall Association will give away prizes and free food.

Wednesday, Aug. 25: The Community Fair, featuring several dozen area businesses, will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Oval.

Thursday, Aug. 26: Chapter 6, an a cappella singing group, will be held at 7 p.m. at Gorilla Village.

Friday, Aug. 27: Treat Night at the Movies will be held at 7 p.m. at the U-Club Theatre in the Student Center.

The following week will offer additional entertainment, as well. On Sept. 1, the hypnotist Michael C. Anthony will perform at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom. And at 7 p.m. on Sept. 3, students can enjoy the movie "Shrek Forever After" at Carnie Smith Stadium.
