Active: A fully initiated member of a fraternity/Sorority
Alumni/Alumnae : A group of initiated members who are no longer in college
Alumnus/Alumna: An initiated member who is no longer in college
Alumni/Alumnae Advisors: Alumni/ae who bring experience and guidance to collegians
Bid: A formal invitation to pledge a fraternity/sorority
Chapter : The local group of the larger (international organization, represented by a special Greek-letter name.
Formal Recruitment : The recruitment period set aside by Panhellenic Council/Interfraternity Council for membership selection
Fraternity : A Greek letter brotherhood; the term 'fraternity' often applies to a sorority.
Initiation : The formal ceremony during which a new member begins full membership in a fraternity/sorority.
Legacy : A potential new member who has a close relative who is a member of a sorority.
New Member : A person who has accepted a bid but has not yet been initiated.
Philanthropy : Projects sponsored by Greek chapters to raise money for charitable organizations.
Potential New Member : A full-time PSU student interested in joining a Greek-letter organization.
New Member Period : A time during which new members learn about the Greek chapter and its members.
Quota : The specified number of new members each chapter can accept during formal recruitment.
Reference Letter/Recommendation : A letter signed by an alumnus/alumna recommending an individual for membership. These letters are not required for PSU recruitment.
Run-Out : An event involving two or more Greek-letter organizations.
Recruitment : The mutually selective process by which potential members and fraternity/sorority members get to know each other.
Recruitment Counselor (Rho Gamma) : A sorority member who has disaffiliated from her sorority during recruitment week to assist female students interested in recruitment.
Sororities : A Greek letter sisterhood; sometimes referred to as women's fraternities.
