Russ Jewett, Janice Jewett, and Treva Sherman, chairpersons of this year's "Power of One" campaign, presented a check to PSU President Tom Bryant for $100,928.27 at Wednesday's campaign celebration. The campaign runs officially through the end of the fiscal year, with donations going to any area of the giver's choice including scholarships, departments, and the university's unrestricted fund. The check total represents the amount of donations received since the campaign began July 1.
Holly Kent, director of annual giving at PSU, said she is glad employees are willing to give despite uncertain economic times.
"We've had more than 300 employees make gifts so far, and the total from the last fiscal year showed that 485 people gave," Kent said. "It's telling us that we're making great progress. Employees understand the importance of giving back to the university, which in turn provides so much to the community."
The Office of University Development, a division of university advancement, reports that 100 percent of the 65 employees in advancement are making charitable gifts to the university - a trend they challenge other offices and departments to match. By providing departments with information about the percentage of employees in their area who are giving, Kent hopes it will serve as encouragement.
"We think that by having a friendly competition, those numbers will go even higher," she said.
The campaign co-chairs told the crowd gathered for the announcement that they were grateful and proud of their peers for their willingness to give.
"I am so proud of everyone and glad that I have a job here," Sherman said. "Pittsburg State has given me a wonderful place to work for a long time. It's so nice to see people support the university."
