About Carol Deats

Dr. Carol Deats teaches Children's Music, Elementary Music Methods, and Horn at Pittsburg State University. She earned Bachelor of Music degrees in Horn Performance and Music Education (magna cum laude) from Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts and completed the Master of Music degree in Horn Performance and Literature at Eastman School of Music. She received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Fine Arts from Texas Tech University. In addition to an all-level music teacher's certificate, she holds a Montessori certificate and has completed Levels I and II in Orff-Schulwerk at Southern Methodist University. Dr. Deats is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda.

Before coming to PSU, Dr. Deats held a part-time position at Pennsylvania State University, and adjunct positions at Bucknell University, Midland College, and Howard College. She taught elementary music for a decade, in both public and private schools. During this time, she established in-school concerts and a Suzuki violin program. Dr. Deats also taught horn lessons to band students through the public school system. In addition, she conducted master classes and adjudicated solo and ensemble festivals and UIL competitions.

As a horn player, Dr. Deats has performed in orchestral, chamber, and solo venues throughout the United States and Italy. Some highlights of her orchestral career include performing under the batons of Ricardo Muti, Klaus Tennstedt, and Anshel Brusilow. Dr. Deats is privileged to have shared the stage with numerous world-class artists, such as Abbey Simon, Lili Kraus, Susan Starr, and Susan Graham. She has also performed in orchestras featuring world renowned popular artists, such as Ray Charles, Moody Blues, and Kansas. She performed internationally with the Rome Festival Orchestra.

Some highlights of her chamber music career include performing at Carnegie and Avery Fischer Halls in New York City with the Permian High School Choir. Dr. Deats has toured throughout the state of Texas with the Lone Star Brass Quintet. She is featured on two compact disc recordings with the Lone Star Brass Quintet: Lone Star Christmas, and Western Fanfare. She also participated in Young Audiences.

In addition to performing numerous solo recitals, Dr. Deats performed a solo horn concerto with the Abilene Philharmonic.
