Going out with a bang - All-American track and field athletes Kiara Jones and Mike Beeler reflect upon their incredile collegiate careers
After five years and more than 11 All American honors, one would think national finishes in the last meet of their careers would be the icing on the cake for Kiara Jones and Mike Beeler. But for the pair, something else outshined the individual medals this season.
“The most memorable thing for me is winning the conference title,” said Beeler, who graduated with a Bachelors degree in Chemistry this spring. “This team had a great amount of talent and I think the young guys really made the difference.”
“This was our first time winning conference since I have been here,” said Jones, who also graduated this past spring with a degree in General Studies. “It was surreal. We have had so many chance to win the conference meet and we finally did!”
The two seniors attributed the team’s success to the talent and the bond between all members. “Everyone believed we could win and put in the hard work,” said Jones.
Head coach Russ Jewett, who was named 2011 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year had a similar reaction to the championship. “This whole group of guys came together because of the leadership from the older guys like Kiara and Mike. Someone has to set up and be the unifiers and these guys really did it.”
