Battle holiday weight gain with exercise

At a time of the year when losing weight may seem out of the question, a new program may help students, faculty and staff use exercise to at least keep their weight steady amidst the onslaught of calories between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The “Maintain, Don’t Gain” program encourages participants to stay active over the holidays to keep from putting on extra pounds. Those who maintain their weight within a two-pound margin will be entered into a drawing for prizes, according to Bryce Winklepleck, assistant director for fitness and wellness. All participants will receive a T-shirt and wristband.

“The program serves as an incentive for people to stay active and not overeat during the holidays,” Winklepleck said. “We want our students, faculty and staff to stay motivated and focused on good health and nutrition while they enjoy the holiday season.”

Participants will be weighed three times during the campaign, beginning in the days before Thanksgiving. The second weigh-in will take place Dec. 10-12, and final weigh-in will take place Jan. 14-16.
