John Morello will present "Dirt: A One Man Show of Substance Abuse and Choices" at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in McCray Hall at Pittsburg State University.
Morello is an actor, comedian, and educator who has been performing for 15 years. When he was a teenager he witnessed friends and family members lose their lives to drugs and alcohol, leading him to the work he does today. Morello has also been a teacher in a treatment center for teens, where he saw many students repeat the family cycles of self-neglect and self-abuse.
Dirt connects with students and adults by depicting real characters making real choices. His characters provide a mirror for the audience to see themselves and the choices they make on a daily basis.
By using comical circumstances that appear in everyday life, Morello's show provides a serious message. Some of his segments and characters include: a World War II veteran reflecting on his choices in battle and sacrifices for the present generation; a teenage girl who drinks socially; a poetry festival gone hilariously wrong; and "Voices From the Dirt," characters telling their struggles with being and loving an addict.
The presentation is co-sponsored by the Regional Prevention Center of Southeast Kansas and Gorillas In Your Midst, Pittsburg State University's peer health education group.
