Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, in McCray Recital Hall on the Pittsburg State University campus. Alessi's performance is part of the 2011-2012 Solo and Chamber Music Series.
Alessi will be joined in his Pittsburg performance by pianist Martha Locker and trumpeter Vince DiMartino, who is at PSU for the 2011 Midwest Trumpet Festival.
Joe Alessi was appointed principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic in 1985. He was a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony while still in high school and continued his musical training at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music. Alessi is an active soloist, recitalist, and chamber music performer. He has been a guest soloist with many symphonies, both in the U.S. and abroad. Currently, Alessi is on the faculty of the Juilliard School.
The program of the Pittsburg concert includes Serge Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet Suite," as well as works by Frank Martin, Roger Boutry, Philippe Gaubert, Jacques Castérède, Herbert L. Clarke and Joseph Turrin.
Tickets for the performance are $12 for the general public and $8 for persons over 65 or under 18. Full-time PSU students are entitled to a free ticket.
