Resident Assistants

A Resident Assistant (RA) is assigned to each community. These upperclassmen or graduate students have been carefully selected and trained to coordinate and assist a floor or a wing of a residence hall. They are an excellent source of information regarding both personal and collegiate matters. The RAs are responsible for creating a floor community, providing a variety of social and developmental programming, and enforcing policies and procedures. The RA is a personal liaison between the University community and residence hall students. If students have a problem or question, the RAs are here to help in any way possible.

RA Selection Process

RA Informational Meetings
Candidates MUST attend ONE of the following informational meetings. In these meetings the selection process, requirements, and details of the position will be discussed. There will also be time to ask questions to current housing staff members.

All Informational meetings will be held at 7:30pm in the Sunflower Room, Overman Student Center on the following dates:

November 30, 2017
January 17, 2018
January 22, 2018

If you cannot make one of these meetings, please set up a one-on-one meeting with Corey Ipock, Staff Selection Coordinator.

Online Application
Candidates must fill out the online application to be considered in the application process. In this application, you will need to turn in a resume, answer a few questions, and sign up for your personal interview and group interview times. The application will be open on January 1st, 2018. All applications are due on January 26th, 2018 by 11:59pm. The application can be found by clicking the following link:

Personal Interviews
Candidates will participate in ONE 30 minute personal interview with two of the four Area Coordinators (ACs). This is the time that the ACs will get to know the applicant personally and ask questions pertaining to the RA Position. These interviews are scheduled by the candidate at the end of the online application process and will take place February 12th-16th in the Career Services Office.

Recommendation Forms
University Housing requires two (2) different recommendation forms per applicant. One recommendation will come from an RA and the other one can be given to anyone who may know the candidate’s work ethic, i.e. professors, former boss, former teacher, etc. These forms are posted as an on-line form. Please limit yourself to only two recommendations submitted. Having more than two recommendations does not give a candidate an advantage.

What is the Group Interview Process?
The group interview process is an activity where you will be placed into groups with other candidates applying for RA positions. Each group will participate in various activities and be evaluated based on creativity of thought, communication skills, and teamwork abilities.

What kind of person makes a good RA candidate?
There is no “cookie-cutter” RA! We are looking for candidates who exhibit creativity, enthusiasm, honesty, a strong work ethic, communication and leadership skills, responsibility and time management. We will be looking for people who can positively contribute to each buildings community.

Who will interview me?
During the group interview process the interview team will consist of current Resident Assistants, Assistant Residence Hall Directors, Area Coordinators, and the Associate Director of Housing. The individual interviews will be conducted by 2 of the 4 Area Coordinators.

What is expected Dress for the interviews?
Although you will be evaluated on your character and responses during your interviews, it is important to dress appropriately for professional situations.  RA candidates should wear business casual attire. If you are unsure of appropriate attire, please ask your RA or a member of the professional staff.

What if I don’t have a GPA at the time I submit my Application?
No Stress! You can notify us next semester about your GPA, by phone call or e-mail.
