Students share research at Capitol event

Six Pittsburg State University will present their research today on the first-floor rotunda of the State Capitol as part of the annual Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol. The event runs from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Six Pittsburg State University will present their research today on the first-floor rotunda of the State Capitol as part of the annual Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol. The event runs from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is designed to showcase the research that is being conducted by students at the state’s four-year institutions. About 40 undergraduate student projects will be presented.

“Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol is an opportunity for our state legislators and other guests visiting the Capitol to see first-hand the quality of research in which undergraduates across Kansas are engaged,” said Pawan Kahol, dean of the Office of Graduate & Continuing Studies/dean of research. “PSU has embraced a learn-by-doing approach that includes undergraduates actively involved in discovery and research. This event illustrates the vital role that higher education plays in strengthening our own Kansas economy and workforce. It shows the interrelatedness of Kansas to the rest of the world.”

The following PSU students will present their work at Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol:

Courtney Blankenship, junior in communication, “An Analysis of Social Stigmas Regarding Poverty.” Faculty mentor: Joey Pogue.

Laci Hadorn, senior in chemistry, “Drug Cocktail-Carrying Nanomedicine for the Treatment of Cancer.” Faculty mentor: Sanimukul Santra.

Ashley Jimenez, senior in chemistry, “Polymer Supported Cobalt Oxides for Improvement Energy Storage Devices.” Faculty mentor: Ram Gupta

Evan Noel, senior in chemistry, “Destabilizing Metastasis Associated Lung Adenocarcinoma Transcript 1 (Non-Protein Coding)-MALAT1 RNA.” Faculty mentors: James McAfee and Irene Zegar.

Hannah Thomas, senior in biology, “The Spatial Expression of the T Cell Homing Receptor, CCR7, is Differently Regulated by Progesterone and Estradiol in the Rat Uterus.” Faculty mentor: Virginia Rider.
